Absinthe: Spirit of Mystery
“Let me be mad, then, by all means! mad with the madness of Absinthe, the wildest, most luxurious madness in the world! Vive la folie! Vive lâ amour!”
—Marrie Corelli, Wormwood: A Drama of Paris
Emerging from Switzerland’s Val-de-Travers in the mid-eighteenth century, no other drink has left quite the same cultural wake as absinthe—a wake tthat continues to ripple through art, literature, popular culture, and the imagination.
Known as La Fée Verte—the Green Fairy—absabsinthe bewitched artists, poets, authors, bohemians, boulevardiers, and countless others. Its cultural influence is rivaled only by the ferocity of the backlash against it: a campaign of scandal, myth, moral panic, and prohibition that saw the spirit banned across much of Europe and the United States, in some places for over a century!
Spend a lively evening with absinthe historian and expert C.H. Becker as he guides you through the labyrinthine world of La Muse Verte. Mr. Becker will explore its prehistory and history, its influence and scandals, its myths and facts—and much moreâ—as he introduces guests to this singular beverage and the enduring mystique surrounding it. The evening will include material never presented in any of his previous talks on the subject.
The evening will begin with a lively presentation, followed by questions and answers. Afterward, guests may gather for a guided absinthe flight with food and cheese pairings—whether they choose to taste L’Émeraude or simply enjoy the company and conversation, in the spirit of fin-de-siècle Parisian cafés and salons.
