We’ve also had various celebrities stop by the PinChurch, from Jason Sudekis of SNL to Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.

Music is everywhere, from impromptu jam sessions to organized formal concerts – expect more video releases soon!

New Year – New Projects!

A lot has been going on in the past few months and we’ve been remiss at going into the details. We’ve held a number of fundraisers, tournaments and hosted countless gatherings and events with both locals and people from around the world who have wanted to visit our fabulous makerspace and private studio.

We are also gearing up for the second-annual Louisiana State Pinball Championships, held at the PinChurch.

We are now more than half way towards meeting our membership quota. When we do, the group will be more exclusive and picky about future members – we feel keeping the core membership a modest size means we can focus more on personal relationships and group projects as opposed to the endless fundraising that many of these types of organizations become mired in. So if you’ve been thinking of joining, now is the time! Even if you’re not local, there are a myriad of benefits of becoming a member – and eventually we hope to spawn regional clubs in different areas.

We’re setting up a dedicated podcasting station for people to produce their own shows; making progress on the public arcade project and talking with several different groups who want to partner with us to bring a high-class, large-scale pinball parlor to the city, working on acquiring new technology such as 3D printers and CnC equipment, and forming new sub-groups (we call “cartels”) on everything from gaming to beer brewing.

The MK has been working with the Krewe of Chewbacchus and helping various sub-krewes with design and development of custom micro-controlled LED costumes and systems, our own in-house “Project Lightbox” which is designed to illustrate a variety of aspects of industrial design, manufacturing, merchandising and related skills. We’re continuing to learn and produce videos of artists, and in the next few months we have even more high-profile artists that will be coming to our place — stay tuned for more!

MK Represents at the NOMA Odyssey Ball

odyssey_ballThe Mystic Krewe was honored to be selected as a partner and sponsor for the 2014 New Orleans Museum of Art “Odyssey Ball” event last month. This is the museum’s major fundraising event of the year, a fancy black-tie gala featuring live bands, choreographed entertainment, a silent auction of many special gifts, wonderful food and amazing artwork, attended by many of the regions most influential luminaries.

In association with a new exhibit opening featuring photo-realist painting, the Mystic Krewe brought an array of vintage pinball machines representing a variety of eras in the technology, not just for display, but for the play and amusement of the patrons. “For once, here’s something in the museum you can touch!”, quipped MK founder, Michael Perry.

The event was a huge hit and we are looking forward to doing more activities with NOMA and their patrons! The games displayed covered the electro-mechanical era with a Gottlieb Wedgehead called “Jacks Open” featuring its own unique artwork, an early solid-state game from 1979 called, “Genie”, an early 1990’s game from Bally/Williams, “Jackbot” to the ultra-modern game released in 2013, JJP’s “Wizard of Oz” pinball!

The success of the event and the huge interest it generated further demonstrates the interest among the local community for a dedicated, vintage pinball venue, which we are actively seeking to establish. A lot of great contacts were made among important dignitaries in the area that we hope will bring us further towards our goal of making these wonderful machines available to the general public.

MK Tournament Raises Money For Project Pinball/Children’s Hospital

project pinballThe 2014 PinGolf benefit tournament was a great success.  The Mystic Krewe raised money to benefit “Project Pinball” and Children’s Hospital, hosting a team-based event that paired experienced competitors with casual players, encouraging sharing and cooperation.  Everyone had a great time and the event was a sell-out.

The winners of the main tournament were Wes G., Mike M., Jake W. and Dennis W.  We also ran a side tournament as well as 2 cashbox tournaments.  The events covered vintage pinball games from virtually all eras including electro-mechanical, classic solid state, modern DMD as well as the new Wizard of Oz LCD game.  Participants received IFPA championship points that make them eligible to compete in the upcoming state championships next year and get a chance to represent Louisiana in the National and International Pinball Championships in 2015.

mk_benefit1   This is the second charity fundraising event the Mystic Krewe has produced.  The group plans many more benefits to provide resources to local charities and other organizations.  If you are interested in finding out more about our group or becoming a member, see the “About” link on the main menu.
